EMERGENCY SAFETY

When Should You Call 911 Instead of Driving to the ER?

Call 911 right away—for yourself or someone else—if symptoms could be life-threatening.
WHEN TO CALL

Call 911 for:

Suspected heart attack

Severe or crushing chest pressure

Severe difficulty breathing

Loss of consciousness

Severe weakness or collapse

Chest pain with stroke signs, such as facial drooping, arm weakness, or slurred speech

Severe allergic reaction affecting breathing

Rapidly worsening symptoms

Paramedics can begin treatment on the way, including an EKG, oxygen, and medications, and can alert the emergency team before you arrive.
Don’t drive yourself if your condition could suddenly worsen, and don’t let someone with these symptoms drive.
